We have a new calendar! We’re experimenting with including free cultural and educational events at other local and regional libraries, museums, and non-profits. We hope a compilation of these great events will be a valuable resource for our community. Click on the categories above the calendar to limit the results by drive time from the Bolton Free Library. Be sure to check the hosting organization’s website for schedule changes and cancellations. Note that some of the events at and within 10 minutes of our library are not free; these are denoted with a “($)” and costs are included in those descriptions.

Check back often for updates and let us know what you think!

At a tuberculosis sanitarium in the Adirondacks, a young tutor falls in love with a mysterious woman who survived the Lusitania disaster.

Recently jilted by his fiancé, Paul Gascoyne takes a job as a tutor to the patients at the Trudeau Sanitarium in upstate New York. There, in the icebound beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, he finds himself drawn to Sarah Ballard, a beautiful but enigmatic young woman, traumatized by her past aboard the ill-fated ship Lusitania. To rouse her out of her gloom, Paul encourages her to write a memoir.

As Paul reads her words, it gradually becomes clear that Sarah’s memories are a tangle of truth and fiction that he can’t begin to unravel. And yet he cannot overcome his attraction to her. When a terrible relapse leaves Sarah worried that she has little time left, she begs Paul to be the one person in the world who will truly know her.

About The Speaker:
Giles Blunt grew up in North Bay, Ontario, before studying English Literature at the University of Toronto. The author of twelve novels, including the award-winning John Cardinal Mystery series, Blunt has more recently turned to literary fiction with Bad Juliet. He lives in Toronto.

Mamie Lang Kirkland was seven years old when she fled Ellisville, Mississippi in 1915 with her mother and siblings as her father and his friend, John Hartfield, escaped an approaching lynch mob. John Hartfield returned to Mississippi in 1919 and was killed in one of the most horrific lynchings of the era. Mamie had vowed for a century that she would never return to Mississippi. Yet with Tarabu’s remarkable find, he urged his mother to finally confront her childhood trauma by returning to Ellisville. Mamie was 107 when they began the journey to connect her story to the larger impact of America’s legacy of racial violence, which echoes today from Ferguson to New York, Atlanta to Los Angeles. Like many of the six million African Americans who left the Deep South, Mamie’s story is a testament to the courage and hope of her generation. Her indomitable will and contagious joy of living is exceeded only by her ability to tell her story now 111 years later. In a time of great social divisions, ‘100 Years from Mississippi’ gives us the simple wisdom of an ordinary woman’s extraordinary life.

The Caldwell-Lake George Library Book Club will meet on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30 pm to discuss James by Percival Everett.
When Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he runs away until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck has faked his own death to escape his violent father. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.
Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a literary icon, this brilliant and tender novel radically illuminates Jim’s agency, intelligence, and compassion as never before. James is destined to be a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.

Feminist philosopher Dr. Lindsey Stewart’s book, The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic, tells the stories of Negro Mammies of slavery; the Voodoo Queens and Blues Women of Reconstruction; and the Granny Midwives and textile weavers of the Jim Crow era. These women, in secrecy and subterfuge, courageously and devotedly continued their practices and worship for centuries and passed down their traditions.

Conjure informs our lives in ways remarkable and ordinary—from traditional medicines that informed the creation of Vicks VapoRub and the rise of Aunt Jemima’s Pancake Mix, to the original magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), and the true origins of the all-American classic blue jean.

From the moment enslaved Africans first arrived on these shores, conjure was heavily regulated and even outlawed. Now, Stewart uncovers new contours of American history, sourcing letters from the enslaved, dispatches from the lore of Oshun and other African mystics. The Conjuring of America is a love letter to the real magic Black women used, their herbs, food, textiles, song, and dance, used to sow rebellion, freedom, and hope.

Join us to take part in the magic and celebrate the legacy of America’s founding Black women. Register for free today!

Part I

The Central Park Five, from award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns, tells the story of the five black and Latino teenagers from Harlem who were wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York City's Central Park in 1989. This Peabody Award winning film chronicles the Central Park Jogger case, for the first time from the perspective of the five teenagers whose lives were upended by this miscarriage of justice.

On April 20, 1989, the body of a woman barely clinging to life is discovered in Central Park. Within days, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Yusef Salaam confess to her rape and beating after many hours of aggressive interrogation at the hands of seasoned homicide detectives. The five serve their complete sentences, between 6 and 13 years, before another man, serial rapist Matias Reyes, admits to the crime, and DNA testing supports his confession.

In 2002, based upon Matias Reyes's confession, a judge vacated the original convictions of the Central Park Five. A year later, the men filed civil lawsuits against the City of New York, and the police officers and prosecutors who had worked toward their conviction. On June 19, 2014, the New York Times reported that New York City had agreed to a settlement.

This lecture is a retrospective on the nineteen years Susan B Anthony’s family lived in the hamlet of Battenville in the Town of Greenwich on the Batten Kill. Many people don’t realize that Susan’s family moved to Battenville in 1826 when Susan was only 6 years old. The area is a virtual history book of the Anthony family but until recently there was not a historic marker anywhere. Many of the events that formed Susan’s thoughts about women’s suffrage were developed in this little settlement during her childhood and young adulthood. Most people drive through this historic community without knowing its amazing history.

Included will be the influence on Susan’s life by her Quaker heritage from the Anthony family. Daniel Anthony and his family were a part of the Quaker friends in the Adams, Massachusetts before their move to Battenville in 1826. Susan’s mother, Lucy Anthony remained a Baptist throughout her life even though she attended the Quaker meetings with her husband and the children.

Photos of the newly restored outside of the Battenville house will be included in the presentation

Debi Craig and Sandy McReynolds will present a Power Point presentation focusing on the numerous sites in Greenwich, Easton, Jackson, and Cambridge, NY that involved the Anthony family.

Debi Craig is past president of the Washington County Historical Society and still serves as chairperson for the Washington County History Fair and the Programming Committee. She is also president of the NorthStar Historical Project which promotes Underground Railroad history in the Easton/Greenwich area. She is Corresponding Secretary of the Hebron Preservation Debi also serves as Hebron historian. She is Chaplain of the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Sandy McReynolds is historian of the Gill Room in the Greenwich Free Library. She is also historian for the Town of Greenwich. Sandy is a member of the Easton-Greenwich Historical Association. She is the  Past Regent for the Willard’s Mountain Chapter of the DAR. Sandy frequently leads walking tours of the historic district in Greenwich focusing on many different topics of local history.

Tom D. Crouch, a Smithsonian veteran of almost 45 years, paints a robust picture of a unique American establishment and its lasting legacies in his book Smithson’s Gamble.

Follow the fascinating growth and development of the world's largest museum and research complex during its first 60 years. Told in rich detail, Smithson's Gamble reveals how, as it defined a role rooted in curiosity and exploration, the Smithsonian helped to shape the nation's developing identity.

The Smithsonian evolved from a small, narrowly focused organization into an institution leading the way in fields from astrophysics to zoology. Smithsonian researchers, and the hundreds of citizen scientists who they recruited, created a collection that documented the natural and human history of a continent. The American conservation movement and a national weather service are rooted at the Smithsonian. Smithson's Gamble is filled with fascinating characters, twists and turns, and moments of triumph and tragedy, complete with political machinations, a bit of backstabbing, accusations of murder, and the occasional scandal.

Take a journey into the hidden world of bird communication, as Dr. Samantha Carouso Peck discusses her Cornell University research on how and why birds sing, dance, and speak. She will explore the ways in which birdsong resembles human song and speech, and how birds learn to sing by shaping up their tunes, using feedback from parents and peers that is imperceptible to the human eye. Dr. Peck will discuss the incredible vocal flexibility of songbirds, parrots, and other mimics that incorporate human sounds into their repertories, and how birds pass down songs through the generations. She will also take a ‘bird’s eye view’ of how birds perceive time, sound, and motion differently from us, and how this affects their learning of song and dance, from acoustic acrobatics to backflips to tapdancing.

Dr. Samantha Carouso Peck is an expert in bird communication and cognition, having lived on six different continents in search of interesting birds. She has studied tool use in crows, speech in African Grey Parrots, and vocal learning and development in songbirds. After focusing on Animal Behavior and Communication during her undergraduate studies at Williams College, her doctoral dissertation at Cornell University focused on how young birds use feedback from their parents and peers, in forms invisible to the human eye, to guide their song learning. Her work has been published in Current BiologyPhilosophical TransactionsAnimal Behaviour, and Scientific American. She is currently the Head Ornithologist and Educator of the Grassland Bird Trust, a non-profit conservation organization in Fort Edwards, New York.

This event is co-sponsored by SAAS and the Glens Falls-Saratoga Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club.

Artist Statement: There is a rhythm in Nature, a vibration which, despite the noise and disruption of our daily lives, continues to pulsate with a quiet beat in our story. When we disconnect from this rhythm, the loss of its energy depletes the deepest part of us. But then, if we quiet, we can sense it in our longing for something we can’t quite identify. We feel its presence in the passing of a storm, the roar of a spring stream, the call of a loon, the view from the top of a mountain. And, if we listen carefully for her poetry and her song, perhaps we can remember Nature’s heartbeat and hear her message. We depict her in art in order to remember.

Susan Bouton: Susan Bouton is a fine art photographer and owner of Oak Pointe Photography in Niskayuna, New York. She holds a B.A. from the University of Rochester in Art History and is a graduate of Albany Law School. After many years of practicing law, she began three years of part time study at the International Center of Photography in New York City and completed classes in digital photography, processing and printing as well as numerous specialty areas including Street Photography, Portraiture and most significantly, a Long Term Project culminating in the publication of a photobook on the Adirondacks, The Sound of White.

In addition to coursework at ICP, she has participated in intensive workshops at international locations including Morocco, Istanbul and Scotland with National Geographic photographers Joe McNally and Ira Block and a session in Marseille, France with ICP instructor Stephanie de Rouge.

The images presented at Tannery Pond were all captured in the Adirondacks and focus on winter, spring, and the transition between the two when Earth, after a season of hibernation, comes alive again.
