Goals are what take us forward in life. They are the first step to every journey we take. In this workshop we will explain how goal setting works, why goals are important, and take home more helpful resources to get you started. Remember: "if you aim for nothing, you'll hit it every time." Find out how to reach your dreams. – NORTH COUNTRY AT WORK (NCAW) is a North Country Public Radio project exploring the work history and contemporary economic landscape of each of the communities in the Adirondack North Country. Our starting point is photographs—images of people at work, the tools they use, the spaces their work occupies or impacts. From that starting point, we expand to personal stories, oral histories and other content to deepen our understanding of how the livelihoods of people across northern New York looked in earlier times, how the work has changed and continues to change, how the work we do in one community relates to work being done elsewhere in the region, and how our experience is part of a larger rural experience throughout the United States. Our basic premise: everyone has a photo or work-related story to share. We all work. It all adds up to make this NCAW as illuminating and meaningful as possible. The content for this digital space has been gathered—and continues to be gathered—at locations across the region. We collaborate with town historians, librarians, scholars, museum staff, nonprofit organizations and citizens who have collected and cherish the often hidden history of their communities. NCAW is a cooperative undertaking, and we encourage your contribution to the big story. – Registration required: Hillview Free Library Subject: Afternoon Landscapes & The Full Buck Moon. Please bring a dish to share. – Lake George Arts Project - Shepard Park America’s premier youth fiddling show band from Saline, Michigan, astounds audiences every time the group takes the stage. Help us gather valuable data about New York’s loon population by participating in the NY Annual Loon Census as a community scientist! The NY Annual Loon Census is held on the 3rd Saturday of July each year for one hour. During the census, volunteers across the state of New York observe loons on their assigned lake and report their observations to ACLC. This data provides an annual "snapshot" of the breeding loon population in the state. Results of the census over time provide valuable information regarding the status and trends in New York's summer loon population. The census started in 2001, and has been held annually since. We thank the former Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Program for their collaboration in coordinating the NY Loon Census from 2010-2018. There will be plenty of good questions to chew on when you join us online Wednesday, July 23rd at 4 PM ET via digital live-stream in partnership with Caldwell-Lake George Library! – Using poetry of nature & place to explore connections to the land & water we live near, which have shaped so much of our lives. We’ll walk the land, read some words by poets like Mary Oliver, explore images which speak to us & write in a form we choose. No experience w/poetry needed. $5 suggested – Registration required: Crandall Public Library You’re invited to join us online with award-winning author Rex Ogle as he talks to viewers about his struggles to navigate sixth grade as written about in his book Free Lunch. Instead of giving him lunch money, Rex’s mom has signed him up for free meals. As a poor kid in a wealthy school district, better-off kids crowd impatiently behind him as he tries to explain to the cashier that he’s on the free meal program. The lunch lady is hard of hearing, so Rex has to shout. Free Lunch is the story of Rex’s efforts to navigate his first semester of sixth grade—who to sit with, not being able to join the football team, Halloween in a handmade costume, classmates and a teacher who take one look at him and decide he’s trouble—all while wearing secondhand clothes and being hungry. His mom and her boyfriend are out of work, and life at home is punctuated by outbursts of violence. Halfway through the semester, his family is evicted and ends up in government-subsidized housing in view of the school. Rex lingers at the end of last period every day until the buses have left, so no one will see where he lives. Unsparing and realistic, Free Lunch is a story of hardship threaded with hope and moments of grace. Rex’s voice is compelling and authentic, and Free Lunch is a true, timely, and essential work that illuminates the lived experience of poverty in America. Register now to join the conversation!
