We have a new calendar! We’re experimenting with including free cultural and educational events at other local and regional libraries, museums, and non-profits. We hope a compilation of these great events will be a valuable resource for our community. Click on the categories above the calendar to limit the results by drive time from the Bolton Free Library. Be sure to check the hosting organization’s website for schedule changes and cancellations. Note that some of the events at and within 10 minutes of our library are not free; these are denoted with a “($)” and costs are included in those descriptions.

Godwin Preserve
New York is home to more than 450 species of birds. While hiking up to the Godwin Preserve overlook with an Up Yonda Farm Naturalist, learn birding basics on how to identify birds. The overlook provides great views of soaring raptors and nearby songbirds to test out your new identification skills.
Binoculars and the smartphone app, Merlin Bird ID, are recommended. This hike is rated easy/moderate with several steeper sections. 1.6 miles round-trip.

Join the artist of New York City Ballet for this movement workshop designed especially for children ages 4-12 with disabilities and/or movement disorders. This one-hour workshop will be co-led by a pair of NYCB Dancers and will include an accessible warm-up and choreography inspired by the enchanting story-ballet Coppélia. Modifications, including standing and seated movement options, will be offered throughout the event. Young movers of all abilities and their siblings are welcome.

For hundreds of years, Benedict Arnold's name has been a synonym for "traitor." But he was an ardent fighter for the American Cause from the war's beginning, often enduring hardships and putting his life on the line in the fight against Britain. The year 1777 was a particularly difficult one for the American general; while he fought the British to secure American independence, he also battled Congress over promotions due - but denied- to him. This program delves into how 1777 broke Arnold's "Zeal and Cause" for the United States and placed him on the dark path he ultimately took to committing treason against his beloved country.

Multi Billboard Heatseekers charting singer/songwriter Cassandra Kubinski has performed her piano-driven stories of ambition, connection, loss, and love from living rooms to Barclays Center, from NYC to LA to Thailand to Jamaica and beyond. She’s shared stages with the Goo Goo Dolls, 10,000 Maniacs, Anna Nalick, Dickie Betts, and more.
Born in New Jersey to immigrant parents, Muller began playing piano as a teenager, picking up regular gigs as an accompanist while excelling enough at his academic studies to earn acceptance to Princeton University. A math whiz with a preternatural gift for numbers, he found himself fascinated with the connections between technology and finance, and within a decade of graduating, he’d helped revolutionize the field of quantitative trading, which in turn transformed Wall Street as we know it.

You can’t always rely on your technology in the backcountry (or even some areas in the front country)! In our 90 minute Orienteering Program, you’ll learn the basics of compass and map reading and practice your new compass skills on a short string course before heading out onto Up Yonda Farm’s orienteering course.
This program is best for learners ages 10 and above that are interested in learning how to navigate the outdoors. Participants should be able to walk 1 mile over uneven (uphill and downhill) terrain.
Compasses, maps, and instruction will be provided, and young participants will pair with their adult chaperones as teams on the orienteering course.

Do you love watching loons? Help us gather valuable data about New York’s loon population by participating in the NY Annual Loon Census as a community scientist!
The NY Annual Loon Census is held on the 3rd Saturday of July each year for one hour. During the census, volunteers across the state of New York observe loons on their assigned lake and report their observations to ACLC. This data provides an annual "snapshot" of the breeding loon population in the state. Results of the census over time provide valuable information regarding the status and trends in New York's summer loon population.
The census started in 2001, and has been held annually since. We thank the former Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Program for their collaboration in coordinating the NY Loon Census from 2010-2018.
People all across the state are invited to participate in the Annual Loon Census and submit their observations from any lake in New York.

You’re invited to join us online with award-winning author Rex Ogle as he talks to viewers about his struggles to navigate sixth grade as written about in his book Free Lunch.
Instead of giving him lunch money, Rex’s mom has signed him up for free meals. As a poor kid in a wealthy school district, better-off kids crowd impatiently behind him as he tries to explain to the cashier that he’s on the free meal program. The lunch lady is hard of hearing, so Rex has to shout.
Free Lunch is the story of Rex’s efforts to navigate his first semester of sixth grade—who to sit with, not being able to join the football team, Halloween in a handmade costume, classmates and a teacher who take one look at him and decide he’s trouble—all while wearing secondhand clothes and being hungry. His mom and her boyfriend are out of work, and life at home is punctuated by outbursts of violence. Halfway through the semester, his family is evicted and ends up in government-subsidized housing in view of the school. Rex lingers at the end of last period every day until the buses have left, so no one will see where he lives.
Unsparing and realistic, Free Lunch is a story of hardship threaded with hope and moments of grace. Rex’s voice is compelling and authentic, and Free Lunch is a true, timely, and essential work that illuminates the lived experience of poverty in America. Register now to join the conversation!

Harmless or Venomous? Requested by one of our LGLC’s supporter, come view photos and learn from the prestigious Dr. William S. Brown about what snakes can be found in “our neck of the woods”!
After this presentation, you will have confidence in the recognition of the types of snakes that are in our area, especially which ones are harmless, which will ultimately lead to an enhanced outdoor experience for all nature enthusiasts!
Dr. Brown, with skill honed by four decades of experience, will discuss the identification of our native snakes in northeastern New York using numerous photographs of their characteristics. Ways to distinguish venomous snakes from harmless snakes will be reviewed. Among our larger species of harmless snakes, several are occasionally mistaken for a rattlesnake, including Eastern Milk Snakes, Northern Water Snakes, Black Rat Snakes, and Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes. The smaller harmless species include Eastern Garter Snakes, Northern Brown Snakes, Northern Red-bellied Snakes, Eastern Ring-necked Snakes, and Smooth Green Snakes.

Michale Glennon, Ph.D. - Senior Research Scientist
New York State’s Adirondack Park is a large, intact breeding ground for numerous migratory bird species, several of which are declining throughout their range. A unique component of the Adirondack avifauna is the birds inhabiting the boreal peatlands of the park. Climate change is now widely recognized as the pre-eminent threat to biodiversity in the 21st Century. At the southern range extent for this ecosystem type and many of its avian inhabitants, the park is a valuable location from which to monitor changes in bird populations from a warming climate. Findings from long-term monitoring of boreal birds in the Adirondacks suggest that bird responses to climate change may be mediated by land use patterns, highlight the importance of a patchy habitat distribution, and raise important implications for potential conservation strategies in these habitats.

This science-themed excursion will focus on how boats are powered, starting with the mules that once pulled boats along the canal and ending with the modern engines we see today. Participants will take a short hike to look for different types of boat propulsion in action and explore the area where mules used to tow canal boats. Back at the pavilion, kids will design and build their own balloon-powered boats, experimenting with different designs to see which ones perform best.

What is a zine? Zines are self-published mini booklets and this workshop will teach you how to make your own! This workshop will show participants how to use a single sheet of paper to create a little book that can be easily copied and shared with friends, community and family. Using suggested prompts or one’s own imagination, participants will fill pages with words, drawings and/or collage. This workshop is all about connecting (or reconnecting) with creative play and self-expression while learning about the power (and fun!) of self-publishing.
No drawing experience necessary!

Performers: Hayley Glenn, soprano – as Francine, Owen Connolly, tenor – as Monkey, Madeline Darigan, mezzo-soprano – as Monkey Queen/Lord Tiger, Charles Sanderson, baritone – as Monkey King/Crocodile/Lady Tiger.
"Monkey and Francine in the City of Tigers" is an opera for youth audiences that follows Monkey and his brainy sister Francine as they learn to work together, fusing folktales from India, China, and West Africa, and outsmart a hungry crocodile and a greedy Lord of the Tigers.

July 29th The North Country Jazz Project Big Band, these eighteen musicians are passionate about entertaining, inspiring and educating audiences with a wide variety of music from the Big Band repertoire. Many of our members are local, current or retired music educators. From Count Basie to Chick Corea, from Maynard Ferguson to Stevie Wonder this Big Band plays everything with spirit and skill. This event is free and open to the public.Utilizing music from both Western and non-Western styles, Monkey and Francine in the City of Tigers is an action-packed tale of bravery, smarts, and family ties. Brave Monkey and clever Francine work together to escape the clutches of a dishonest Crocodile and the evil Lord and Lady Tiger to save their family and their kingdom. Their teamwork and bravery show them and their parents that when they work together, they can accomplish anything.This performance was made possible by the generous support of the Stewart’s Shops Holiday Match Grant! Grammy Nominated Professor Louie & The Crowmatix from Woodstock NY have been expanding the borders of the Americana, Roots & Blues genres with Professor Louie’s stories, keyboard playing, singing and accordion. Their repertoire continual expands with Crowmatix songs from their 18 Albums of Originals, Blues and Americana music and the songs Louie learned and helped create directly with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame group “The Band” when he collaborated with them for over 15 years. Co-producing The Band’s last three CD’s including their comeback hits Atlantic City & Blind Willie Mctell along with many of their 90’s repertoire. Rick Danko gave Louie the moniker “Professor Louie”.

Many people think hunger will always exist in America. But just because we don't have the answer to this challenge on a national stage, doesn't mean we can't solve it here at home in the Adirondacks. What would be possible if we restructured our safety nets to support rather than circumvent our local farmers and producers? AdkAction and our partner organizations have been reimagining the future of our food systems by connecting our neighbors in need directly with local farms. This lecture explores how these programs impact the lives of real Adirondackers on both sides of the food system and how this model could support small-scale agriculture as a growth industry in our region.
