We hope a compilation of these great events will be a valuable resource for our community.     Colleen Salisbury, Community Outreach Coordinator, joins us at The Conkling Center to discuss their expanding programs in our area. Longer life means that today's older adults have opportunities unknown to previous generations. Longer life also brings new challenges for both older adults and caregivers. No one understands the new face of aging better than the professionals at Lifespan. Lifespan helps older adults and caregivers take on the challenges and opportunities of longer life. As a regional nonprofit, Lifespan is a trusted source of unbiased information, guidance and more than 30 services and advocacy for older adults and caregivers. They also provide training and education for allied professionals and the community. Annually assist thousands of older adults and caregivers. Lifespan is a member of the American Society on Aging, the National Council on Aging, the Greater Rochester Partnership for the Elderly, Leading Age NY, the State Society on Aging, the NYS Senior Citizen Action Council, and Live On NY.

    Christine Hogan-Kilburn, who in 2021 embarked on developing a book containing a collection of Civil War letters donated to the Historical Society by the Smith family of South Glens Falls. The thirty letters were penned by a Wisconsin soldier to his dear friend John A. Bentley, whose family members resided in the Parks-Bentley house from the mid 1800’s through the early 1900’s. Her presentation is about the book titled, “Dear Friend: Letters from Union Soldier Gustavuus Wintermeyer to John A. Bentley.” She will take you through her journey of discovering the letters, the creation of the book, and several of the things she learned about the Civil War from the very personal insights provided by this young infantryman.

Expected outcomes; Increased understanding of addiction as a disease; improved ability to identify the signs of alcohol misuse and problem gambling among seniors; expanded knowledge of the effects of substance misuse; greater familiarity with the health risks and treatment options for addiction, and improved ability to identify factors that place older adults at risk for substance misuse and protective factors that can help prevent it.

    With the guidance of mushroom enthusiast Sandy Bureaus, head out for an afternoon of mushroom hunting along the AIC trails. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned forager these walks will help expand your knowledge into the mysteries of mycology. Walks will be held every third Sunday at 1pm starting in May and continuing through October. Registration is not required but encouraged.

    Join us for our second spring cleaning day at Peggy’s Point in Hague! This beloved 2-acre grassy park has accessible trails and beautiful garden beds. Volunteers are needed to help clear the lawn of debris, weed the gardens, and spruce up the trail paths.

    Joan and Dale Prouty. There are historical figures throughout the USA who received their education or taught in a one room schoolhouse. Most people are familiar with the educational roots of well-known National historical figures like: Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, Sam Houston, Henry Ford as well as others. In this presentation the Proutys will highlight some National figures that received their education or taught in early one room schools in Washington County, NY. Many of the school buildings remain today and will be featured in the program.
