Buckle up for a wild ride and join us as we sit down for an online chat with debut author Sue Hincenbergs to discuss her novel The Retirement Plan, in which murder is the name of the game. When the only thing standing between three best friends and a sunny beachfront retirement condo are their husbands, what ensues is a diabolical plan to collect on their spouses’ life insurance policies.

After thirty years of friendship, Pam dreams of her perfect retirement with Nancy, Shalisa, Marlene, and their husbands—until their husbands pool their funds for an investment that goes terribly wrong, and their dreams of beachfront condos and a sunny, carefree retirement vanish. The golden years are looking as dreary as their marriages.

But when one husband dies in a freak accident, the other three women are shocked to see his widow rebound with a huge life insurance payout and a new life in Florida. In the aftermath, the women discover that their husbands have identical, seven-figure life insurance policies. A new dream forms, and this time, it involves a hitman. Meanwhile, their husbands have a secret retirement plan of their own.

You won’t want to miss this darkly humorous debut by Sue Hincenbergs, filled with both laugh-out-loud and genuinely tense moments as our headstrong wives pursue their dream retirement at all costs. Register today to take part in the fun!

Winter is coming for the American Army in Canada and the fate of the soldiers rests upon the shoulders of General Richard Montgomery. Following the flashpoint of the Battles of Lexington and Concord in April and the easy capture of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point in May, Congress authorized an invasion upon the advice of General Philip Schuyler in June. With significant support from Connecticut troops, an invasion force moved north from Crown Point in August. When the Americans encountered resistance from the British Army, command devolved upon Brigadier General Richard Montgomery of Rhinebeck. A former British officer, Montgomery had covered much of the same ground nearly twenty years earlier during the French and Indian War. In contrast to that preceding invasion, the efforts of 1775 would conclude in dismal failure.

Join Historian William P. Tatum III, Ph.D., for an unconventional investigation of this generally overlooked campaign, which partly served as a training experience for many leaders who would appear at the Battles of Saratoga. This presentation will focus on the plethora of personnel issues that threatened to defeat the American efforts more quickly and viciously than British resistance. Learn the fates of Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold, riding high on the successful captures of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point, yet soon to face a different experience in Canada. Meet John Brown, the future bane of the British forces re-occupying Ticonderoga. Decode the complicated interplay of the extended Livingston Family relations. Bask in the baleful fury of the age-old enmity between New Englanders and Yorkers. See how these threads came together to form the fabric of Richard Montgomery’s final months of life, a man who wanted nothing more than to be at home in Dutchess County.

William P. Tatum III holds a Ph.D. in British Imperial History from Brown University and has served as the Dutchess County Historian since 2012. He is a peer-reviewed published author and has presented extensively as venues across New York and the East Coast. He also leads Dutchess County’s Rev250 Commission and administers the Dutchess County Rev250 Programming Grant, which has underwritten 22 new projects in 2025.

Join us for a special lecture with Russ Oechsle, collector, author, and researcher specializing in upstate New York clocks.

Following the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, upstate New York became a hub of competition between established out-of-state clock manufacturers and newly arrived craftsmen from the East. These skilled emigrants sought to build a market for locally made clocks among those prospering from the canal-driven economic boom.

Between 1825 and 1845, this rivalry gave rise to dozens of upstate clockmaking firms—some successful, others short-lived. Russ Oechsle will explore the opportunities and challenges these makers faced, illustrating how innovation and risk shaped their industry.

The lecture will highlight remarkable examples from the Museum’s Oechsle Clock Collection, showcasing the enduring craftsmanship and creativity of these early clockmakers.

Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance News Advisory

As the region prepares for a series of events on December 12 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the heroic “Noble Artillery Train” led by Colonel Henry Knox from Ticonderoga to Boston, Warren County and municipal officials are taking time on Tuesday, December 9 to call public attention to the Knox memorials in their communities and recall the sacrifices that eventually produced America’s independence. These events are presented by the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance and the Warren County Commission for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

Warren County is home to five of the 59 bronze plaques embedded in granite that were placed, beginning in 1926, along the path in upstate New York and Massachusetts taken by Knox and his teamsters to move 60 tons of artillery to General George
Washington. This weaponry was the key factor in the Continental Army’s causing British troops to abandon Boston in March 1776, never to return.

The Warren County commemorations on December 9 are scheduled at four of the monument sites as follows, with expected participants listed:
• 10 AM, Lake George Battlefield Park, Fort George Road: Town Supervisor Vinnie Crocitto, Jr., Mayor Ray Perry, municipal Historian Margy Mannix, NY State DAR Custodian Heather Mabee, County Historian Stan Cianfarano, County 250 Commission Chair John Berry
• 11 AM, Route 9 in Queensbury just north of Crandall Park: Queensbury Supervisor John Strough, Glens Falls Mayor Bill Collins, Glens Falls City Historian Wayne Wright, Jane McCrea DAR Chapter Regent Mary Jane Sotanski, County Historian Stan Cianfarano, County 250 Commission Chair & Queensbury Town Historian John Berry
Noon, Town pier/beach at Bolton Landing: Bolton Town Supervisor Ron Conover, Town Historian Ted Caldwell, County Historian Stan Cianfarano, County 250 Commission Chair John Berry

We’ve all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances that birds travel, the ways that they navigate, etc. But did you ever wonder how we figured all of this out? While working for the American Ornithological Society, Rebecca Heisman became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that scientists have used to study bird migration, and this eventually became the basis for her book Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration.

In her talk, she’ll share some surprising stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.

Rebecca Heisman is an award-winning science writer who lives in Walla Walla, Washington, and has worked with organizations including the Audubon Society, the American Bird Conservancy, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the American Ornithological Society. Flight Paths is her first book.

In November 1775, Gen. George Washington gave Henry Knox a mission to travel to New York and bring back cannons for the Continental Army. Knox was a 25-year-old bookseller with no military rank. His trek back to Cambridge has become a beloved part of the American saga. This talk digs deeper into that story, examining such questions as who first had the idea to fetch cannon from Lake Champlain, how Knox had contributed to the Patriot movement, the ways weather affected the mission, and how much those cannon changed the British army’s plans.

J. L. Bell is the author of The Road to Concord: How Four Stolen Cannon Ignited the Revolutionary War and the National Park Service study General George Washington’s Home and Headquarters, Cambridge, Massachusetts. He maintains the Boston1775.net website, offering daily updates of history, analysis, and unabashed gossip about the people of Revolutionary New England. Bell is now working on a book about the troubled first year of the Continental artillery regiment.

The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, in association with the Warren County Commission for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, is proud to present a series of activities on Friday, December 12 at Lake George to commemorate Henry Knox’s heroic journey through the region in December 1775 that brought 60 tons of badly needed artillery to George Washington’s Continental forces  in Boston and force the British to abandon the city.

Lake George’s significance to Knox’s feat cannot be overstated. He stayed at Fort George, on the grounds of today’s Lake George Battlefield Park, for over a week as he finalized plans to move the heavy equipment over a 300-mile route in the dead of winter.

The Alliance is honored to be hosting Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson (The Fate of the Day) and the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra as part of our tribute to Henry Knox and his Noble Train of Artillery.  See details below and in the flyer.

Historian and author John Marks joins the New York State Museum for a thought-provoking talk in connection with the exhibition George Washington: An American Paradox. Drawing from his forthcoming book Thy Will Be Done: George Washington’s Legacy of Slavery and the Fight for American Memory (University of North Carolina Press, April 2026), Marks explores how generations of Americans have remembered, forgotten, and contested George Washington’s involvement with slavery. For over two centuries, Washington’s legacy has been interpreted through shifting lenses. Marks will trace this complex history of memory and mythmaking, revealing how the debates that shape our understanding of Washington’s life are part of a much longer American story—one that continues to influence the way we wrestle with questions of freedom, justice, and national identity today.

This discussion will be moderated by Aaron Noble, Senior Historian and Curator of Political and Military History at the New York State Museum.

Help count birds for this nation-wide Audubon program, organized locally by the LGLC on Sunday, December 14. The CBC is a winter bird census with over 100 years of community science involvement.

Our 15-mile circle includes Amy’s Park in Bolton south to Pilot Knob Preserve in Fort Ann, and the Schroon River in Warrensburg east to Sleeping Beauty and Black Mt in Dresden.

Volunteers may choose to survey routes by foot, car, or boat, or watch a feeder, and submit bird counts as well as weather conditions and hours to the LGLC, which then provides all of the compiled information to Audubon.

This program brings together artist and researcher Carter King (Oneida Nation) and KarenLyne Hill (Onondaga Nation) to reflect on the history and meaning of the shawl associated with Polly Cooper—an Oneida woman whose courage and compassion aided George Washington’s starving troops at Valley Forge in 1778.

Through perspectives on Indigenous material culture, costume design, and family heritage, King and Hill will illuminate how this textile bridges centuries of history, gratitude, and sovereignty. The shawl, currently featured in George Washington: An American Paradox, serves as a profound testament to Oneida contributions to the founding of the United States.
