Come on a surprisingly hilarious journey with us and author Gabe Henry through the history of the English language, while we discuss troublemakers like Mark Twain who broke all the rules. Anyone who has the misfortune to write in English will, every now and then, struggle with its spelling. In our erratic system, choir and liar rhyme, daughter and laughter don’t, and somehow you and ewe can’t agree on a single letter. So why do we still use it? If our spelling is so inconsistent, why haven’t we tried to fix it? In the comic annals of linguistic history, legions of rebel wordsmiths have died on the hill of spelling reform, risking their reputations to simplify English spelling. This book is about them: Mark Twain, Eliza Burnz, Noah Webster, Upton Sinclair, Emma Dearborn, Theodore Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, and the countless other “simplified spellers” who, for a time in their lives, became fanatic about writing kof instead of cough, tung for tongue, and fyzics for physics (and tried futilely to get everyone around them to do it too). The American Legion Post 961, in conjunction with the Capital District of NY Chapter of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), will be conducting a 50th Vietnam War Commemoration ceremony at the Bolton Landing Conservation Center. The Center is located at 56 Edgecomb Pond Road, Bolton Landing, NY 12814. Doors open at 6 pm, check in no later than 6:50 pm. The event will recognize and honor the service of Vietnam War era veterans who served in the military during the period of November 1, 1955, through May 15, 1975, and have time on active duty even if only for training. All branches of the service - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard qualify. The event is free and open to the public, but veterans who register will receive a Vietnam War era lapel pin. Everyone attending must register. The lapel pin is issued by the United States Department of Defense as part of its 50th Anniversary Vietnam War Commemoration, a multi-year program to thank and honor Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice. This "lasting memento of the Nation's thanks" is now proudly worn by more than 2 million previously unheralded patriots. This year is the last year the commemorations will be held, so it is very important to plan to attend. A Surviving Spouse pin will also be issued to the spouse of a deceased veteran who served on active duty in the United States Armed Forces at any time during the period noted above regardless of location. October 4, 2025(2 events) – Registration required: Lake George Land Conservancy Cat and Thomas Mts Preserve, Edgecomb Pond TrailheadJoin a Naturalist on a hike up Cat Mountain and learn about the Leave No Trace Seven Principles®. This is a great way to learn how to best care for our local trails and see some amazing views of the area. This longer hike is considered moderately challenging with views of Lake George and southern Adirondacks. Total length, 5 miles. – Registration required: Up Yonda Farm Eastern chipmunks are characterized by their reddish-brown fur and white underbellies. They have five dark brown stripes running lengthwise down the body with whitish stripes in between. While you paint this chipmunk perched on a branch and showing its prominent tail, a Naturalist will share a Native American folktale about how the chipmunk got its stripes. Paint with Patrice classes are geared for beginners, but open to all ages and artistic abilities. Participants will use acrylic paints on an 8×8 inch stretched canvas and take home a finished painting. $17 per person in addition to Day Use Fee. Members $12. |
