June 2, 2025(2 events) – Preschoolers can stretch, move, and relax in this fun and engaging Preschool Yoga session! Designed for ages 3-5, this class combines simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, and gentle music to encourage movement, mindfulness, and creativity. No experience needed—just wear comfy clothes and socks. The Schroon Lake Arts Council is again sponsoring free Monday Night Jam Sessions starting June 2, 2025, at 6:30pm at the Boathouse Theater on Dock Street. June 4, 2025(5 events) – Many people believe the Vietnam War ended when the United States military withdrew its troops, but that is only partially true. Between the signing of the Peace Accords on January 28, 1973, and the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, approximately 6,000 American civilians, including families with young children, lived and worked in Vietnam. Karen Kaiser and Kat Fitzpatrick were among them. Using images and personal stories—some harrowing, some humorous—Karen and Kat share their real-life experiences in Saigon during the last days of the Vietnam War. You will learn why they were invited into a critical war zone, the nature of a super-secret propaganda radio station, what challenges they faced, and how they made it out in time. This event marks the 50th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon and seeks to honor those who served and acknowledge all who were affected. Join historian Dr. Marsha Barrett for a compelling keynote on Nelson Rockefeller’s rise, retreat, and the unraveling of moderate Republicanism in America. Marsha Barrett is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign. Her research examines the political and social history of the United States during the twentieth century. Barrett’s book, Nelson Rockefeller’s Dilemma: The Fight to Save Moderate Republicanism, examines Rockefeller's career as a means for understanding the fate of moderate Republicanism and the broader transformation of the political landscape after the passage of 1960s federal civil rights legislation. June 7, 2025(6 events) – Registration required: Lake George Land Conservancy The Adirondacks are a unique and special place that we can all work together to protect. Celebrate the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day by learning how you can be a steward of the land. Learn about best practices for outdoor recreation and the Leave No Trace Principles as you hike the Bradley’s Lookout trail at the Pinnacle Preserve. The trail to Bradley’s Lookout is easy/moderate with mostly gradual and flat terrain. 1.2 miles round-trip. – Repair Cafe's provide community members with a free alternative to throwing away their broken household and treasured items. These interactive events provide an opportunity to save money, reduce waste, and connect with other community members. Our volunteer repair coaches will be on hand to try and fix a variety of items such as small appliances, lamps, small pieces of furniture, bicycles, clothing, electronics, and more! A tour of the grounds will show the ruins of Fort George, the burial site of four unknown soldiers killed during the Battle of Lake George in 1755, and three iconic bronze sculptures dedicated in 1903, 1921, and 1939. Moose were extirpated from the Adirondacks in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to habitat destruction and overhunting. But in the 1980s, moose sightings in the Adirondacks began to trickle in. Over the past few decades, moose have established a permanent population in the New York mountains. In 2015, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) began actively monitoring it. June 12, 2025(12 events) – Registration encouraged: Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program APIPP staff will lead an educational walk at Boquet River Nature Preserve that will focus on how to identify and manage some of the most common invasive plants including honeysuckle, knotweed, and barberry. The walk is a great training for professionals and the public alike to learn the best management practices for controlling some of the invasive plants that negatively impact our local environment. If the weather is bad an indoor training will be held at The Nature Conservancy building in Keene Valley. – Donna Britton is a visual artist, musician, and former educator. She has been the “resident artist” at the vintage bike tent at Americade for the last two years. Her recent work is a series of acrylic abstract paintings based on details of motorcycles. She recently had a solo show “Mostly Motorpsychedelic” at the North Country Arts 2nd Floor Gallery in Glens Falls City Hall where she displayed her motorcycle themed paintings, landscapes and some other abstract pieces. In 2023 she had a show titled “Motorpsychedelic” which included thirty of these motorcycle paintings at the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, and one of her paintings, “Lookin’ For Adventure,” took Second Place Best of Show at the Paul Nigra Center for Creative Arts Fall/Winter Juried Show. Ms. Britton’s work will be on display at the library through the end of July. A reception will be held on Tuesday, June 12th at 6:00 pm. – Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC) Our Annual June Arts Festival features local, regional, and national artists offering a variety of products such as jewelry, home goods, food items, fine art, textiles, and more. The event also includes live music from local musicians all weekend long. This event takes place rain or shine. – Join us to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibition, “Chapman Yearbook: 60 Years of Collecting”. This special exhibition highlights six decades of preserving, interpreting, and sharing the rich stories of the Glens Falls–Queensbury community and the greater southern Adirondack region. Framed through the lens of a classic high school yearbook, this exhibition invites visitors to explore selected artifacts from the Museum’s collection of more than 32,000 objects, photographs, and archival records. NORTH COUNTRY AT WORK (NCAW) is a North Country Public Radio project exploring the work history and contemporary economic landscape of each of the communities in the Adirondack North Country. Our starting point is photographs—images of people at work, the tools they use, the spaces their work occupies or impacts. From that starting point, we expand to personal stories, oral histories and other content to deepen our understanding of how the livelihoods of people across northern New York looked in earlier times, how the work has changed and continues to change, how the work we do in one community relates to work being done elsewhere in the region, and how our experience is part of a larger rural experience throughout the United States. Our basic premise: everyone has a photo or work-related story to share. We all work. It all adds up to make this NCAW as illuminating and meaningful as possible. The content for this digital space has been gathered—and continues to be gathered—at locations across the region. We collaborate with town historians, librarians, scholars, museum staff, nonprofit organizations and citizens who have collected and cherish the often hidden history of their communities. In each of our brains, there are approximately one hundred billion cells called neurons. These neurons connect in vast networks that allow us to receive and process information, form memories, and navigate the world. Each individual neuron is composed of more than a billion molecules. On average, each of these tiny molecules only lives for a few days. All told, our brains — which define who we are — are made up of billions upon billions of microscopic building blocks that are continually degraded and replaced. Despite this molecular turmoil, we remember who we are. We remember each other — our parents and children, our childhood friends and neighbors — for decades. How do we do this? How do we remember ourselves and each other when the molecules in our brains only live for a few days? As we age, why do some of us develop diseases that cause us to lose our memories, to lose a coherent sense of self? Thousands of scientists at universities across the country are conducting research to unravel these mysteries. Home-grown researcher, Dr. Erin Barnhart, for an evening of lively scientific discussion. Erin grew up in Easton, graduated from Greenwich Central School (’99) and Harvard (’03), and earned her PhD at Stanford in 2010. Now a professor and scientist at Columbia University, Erin will describe how molecules and cells are organized into complex biological structures like the brain, as well as presenting recent insights from her research group about the maintenance of neurons during aging. She will also discuss how scientific curiosity and investments in fundamental research drive medical breakthroughs, allowing us to live longer, healthier lives. Join us for a special Juneteenth program as we read “Juneteenth Jamboree” by Carole Boston Weatherford, a vibrant story that introduces young readers to the meaning and traditions of this important holiday. June 24, 2025(12 events) – Registration required: Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) Join APIPP and search for aquatic invasive species this summer on your favorite lake or stream. Each year volunteers, lake associations, and partner organizations go out and do early detection surveys for 16 invasive species. In this virtual webinar we will review how to identify the top eight animal and eight plant species that we are looking for. We then review how to report your observations via our forms and by using iMapInvasives. Participants commit to monitoring a waterbody of their choice at least one time between July and September. Later in the summer we will have in-person trainings that allow for hands-on experience with invasive species identification. Join us as we experience the joy of live music and learn about how music activates the hippocampus and the amygdala of the brain and in turn how that affects memory. To be held in the Children's Activity Rooms. – Southern Adirondack Audubon Society at the Bancroft Public Library (Salem) Neil Gifford will provide a synopsis of the individual studies and conservation work being conducted there, focusing on Prairie Warblers and Eastern Whip-poor-wills and inland barrens fire management, and share that their efforts there have had a positive impact on the local shrubland bird community. Gifford is a community representative on the North Atlantic Fire Science Exchange, with more than 28 years of fire ecology, prescribed fire and field ornithology experience. He earned an associate’s from Paul Smith’s College and bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in Ecology and Environmental Science from Plattsburgh State University. Whether you are working on a personal memoir for publication or would simply like to start recording your memories, members can expect to receive peer guidance and feedback in a supportive and welcoming environment. Several writing topics are recommended each month, or people can write about a topic of their own choosing. At each get-together, there is the option to share your writing and receive thoughtful feedback. This group will meet on the last Monday of every month. Registration is required. – Preschoolers can stretch, move, and relax in this fun and engaging Preschool Yoga session! Designed for ages 3-5, this class combines simple yoga poses, breathing exercises, and gentle music to encourage movement, mindfulness, and creativity. Rain Location: Town Hall July 29th The North Country Jazz Project Big Band, these eighteen musicians are passionate about entertaining, inspiring and educating audiences with a wide variety of music from the Big Band repertoire. Many of our members are local, current or retired music educators. From Count Basie to Chick Corea, from Maynard Ferguson to Stevie Wonder this Big Band plays everything with spirit and skill. The powerful vocals of Sherian Nolan are backed by musicians on guitar, keyboards, saxophone, bass, drums, and accordion.
