We have a new calendar! We’re experimenting with including free cultural and educational events at other local and regional libraries, museums, and non-profits. We hope a compilation of these great events will be a valuable resource for our community. Click on the categories above the calendar to limit the results by drive time from the Bolton Free Library. Be sure to check the hosting organization’s website for schedule changes and cancellations. Note that some of the events at and within 10 minutes of our library are not free; these are denoted with a “($)” and costs are included in those descriptions.

Check back often for updates and let us know what you think!

Other Muppets -- Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear and Sam the Eagle -- weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases -- past, present and future. Colgate Resolutions return for a live performance. Established in 1992, this is Colgate University's first gender inclusive a cappella group returning for a 8th performance at Crandall, a regular stop on their January tour.

The Resolutions, or “Resos” as they like to be called, are students brought together by a common goal: to bring beautiful a cappella music to the Colgate community. The Resos pride themselves on their diversity of talents, musical backgrounds, musical tastes, and personalities. Take those ingredients, add a few hours of rehearsal, and you get performances that will make you laugh, cry, swoon, boogie, and beg for more. The Reso repertoire includes everything from pop to jazz to indie to classic rock, and grows every semester as members craft original arrangements of their personal favorites. You can experience the magic of the Resos in concert at various venues around Hamilton, NY throughout the year, or on any of their CDs, available on YouTube and Spotify, and the Folklife Center’s YouTube page.

The show is produced and recorded live by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library, made possible with grant funding from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.

Join us for an online discussion with prominent cultural writer and bestselling author David Brooks on his book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply, in which he helps us pose essential questions: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them? What kind of conversations should you have? What parts of a person’s story should you pay attention to?

Driven by his trademark sense of curiosity and determination to grow as a person, Brooks draws from the fields of psychology and neuroscience and the worlds of theater, philosophy, history, and education to present a welcoming, hopeful, integrated approach to human connection. How to Know a Person helps readers become more understanding and considerate toward others, and to find the joy that comes from being seen. Along the way it offers a possible remedy for a society that is riven by fragmentation, hostility, and misperception.

The act of seeing another person, Brooks argues, is profoundly creative: How can we look somebody in the eye and see something large in them and, in turn, see something larger in ourselves? How to Know a Person is for anyone searching for connection, and yearning to be understood.

Register now to take part in a riveting and timeless conversation on how to connect with people from all walks of life, and why doing so is paramount to our individual and communal growth.

Truck-driving Adirondack folk musician, Josh Clevenstine follows in the footsteps of his musical mentors, Chris Shaw and Dan Berggren. A proud "tradition-bearer" Josh is passionate about applying his own style to old songs and traditions and passing them along to the next generation. His music-propelled by cross picking guitar reminiscent of the great Johnny Cash–is marked by honest lyrics drawn from his own experiences. Harlan Howard famously described country music as "3 chords and the truth" and Josh's powerful songs are a testament to the magic inherent in that particular formula.

Live & Local is produced by the Folklife Center at Crandall Public Library, in cooperation with the Moreau Community Center. This free live concert is made possible with grant funding to the Folklife Center from the New York State Council on the Arts supported by the Governor's Office and the New York State Legislature.

Evan P. Sullivan's recently published book, Constructing Disability after the Great War, is an exploration of how Americans -- both civilians and veterans -- worked to determine the meanings of identity for blind veterans of World War I. Sighted Americans' wartime rehabilitation culture centered blind soldiers and veterans in a mix of inspirational stories. Veterans worked to become productive members of society, even as ableism confined their unique life experiences to a collection of cultural tropes that suggested they were either downcast wrecks of their former selves or were morally superior and relatively flawless as they overcame their disabilities and triumphantly journeyed toward successful citizenship. This talk draws on research from his book to highlight the experiences of a select group of blind veterans and what those veterans can tell us about the broader culture of American rehabilitation after World War I.

Registration requested: Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance

Our dedicated historian-member Mark Silo kicks off the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance’s 2026 programming with his presentation, “Sir William, Where Exactly Were Your Lines?”, on Saturday, January 17, 11 AM at the Holiday Inn Resort Lake GeorgeThe event is being sponsored by the Alliance and is free to the public.

Mark shares the results of his 3+ year analysis of the Battle of Lake George (1755), its landscape and associated mapping from his Civil Engineering perspective, along with primary and secondary sources published over the past 270 years. Not only was this battle the initial conflict witnessed by what is today’s Lake George Battlefield Park—it was the first significant victory for the British in the French & Indian War and gave American-born provincial soldiers valuable experience that served them well in the Revolutionary War 20 years later.

Additional Information:

It is widely agreed that Mark Silo has defined the precise whereabouts of Johnson’s lines during the transformational Battle of Lake George on September 8, 1755. Using historical documentation combined with modern maps, photos, and measurements, the presentation provides an overview of the battle and describes Mark’s process in discovering the exact location of the “improvised barricade” used by Col. William Johnson’s troops in the modern Lake George Battlefield Park. The program supplements details conveyed to those who have attended Mark’s tours since 2023, and will acquaint all attendees with the stakes and outcomes from this seminal event of the French and Indian War.

Mark Silo is a native of Yonkers who relocated to the Albany area after receiving his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and his master’s degree from Cornell University, both in civil engineering. He spent his professional career in transportation engineering, most recently as an Assistant Commissioner at the N.Y.S. Department of Transportation in Albany. He has served his local community as a member of the Town of Colonie Planning Board and Conservation Council, and as a board member of Friends of the New York State Military Museum, Capital District Civil War Round Table, Southern Adirondack Audubon Society, volunteer builder at Habitat for Humanity, and his Church Council. Silo is an avid student of American history and is the author of The 115th New York in the Civil War (McFarland Publishing, 2007), the unit history of a local civil war regiment. He and his wife, Kathy, split time among their home in Loudonville, their log cabin on the Schroon River in the Adirondacks, and various bucket-list locales. They have two grown children and two grandsons.

Be sure to jump start your new year with us as we chat virtually with journalist and author Julia Hotz about her book The Connection Cure: The Prescriptive Power of Movement, Nature, Art, Service, and Belonging.

The Connection Cure combines diligent science reporting, moving patient success stories, and surprising self-discovery to help us discover the lasting and life-changing power of social prescribing. Traditionally, when we get sick, health care professionals ask, “What’s the matter with you?” But around the world, teams of doctors, nurses, therapists, and social workers have started to flip the script, asking “What matters to you?”

Science shows that social prescribing is effective for treating symptoms of the modern world’s most common ailments—depression, ADHD, addiction, trauma, anxiety, chronic pain, dementia, diabetes, and loneliness. By integrating age-old medicines like art, nature, movement, and volunteer service into patient’s daily lives, social prescriptions are radically changing health and healthcare in more than thirty countries. Julia Hotz travels around the world to survey them sea-swimming lessons for depression, “culture vitamins” for anxiety,  a fishing club for ADHD, a farm-based day-care for dementia, a phone-buddy program for social isolation, and many more.

As the first book on social prescribing, The Connection Cure empowers you to find, experience, and implement this revolutionary medicine in your own community. The success stories Julia finds bring a long-known theory to life: if we can change our environment, we can change our health. By reconnecting to what matters to us, we can all start to feel better.

Register today to find out how you can use the wisdom of social prescribing to live your best life!

Join our monthly book group for a welcoming discussion of great reads. Each month we explore a new title and share our thoughts in a relaxed, engaging setting. New members are always welcome—come discover your next favorite book and enjoy good conversation! In January, we are discussing The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. Check your copy out at the Park Reference Desk.

At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.
The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother. The two wealthy siblings are thrown back into the poverty their parents had escaped from and find that all they have to count on is one another. It is this unshakeable bond between them that both saves their lives and thwarts their futures.
Set over the course of five decades, The Dutch House is a dark fairy tale about two smart people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny and Maeve are only truly comfortable when they’re together. Throughout their lives they return to the well-worn story of what they’ve lost with humor and rage. But when at last they’re forced to confront the people who left them behind, the relationship between an indulged brother and his ever-protective sister is finally tested. From Publisher

Lake George Arts Project

Artist statement

My work examines familiar yet easily overlooked elements within the contemporary American landscape.  Each series of abstract drawings and watercolor paintings chart detailed observations of ordinary subjects such as advertisements, product packaging, online shopping, and suburban environments. Processes such as color matching, measuring, and photography are used to distill and transform the seemingly unremarkable minutiae of daily life. The allure in our everyday surroundings is revealed in my work through an intimate and systematic interpretation of color, space, and time.

We are thrilled to welcome Liz Moore to discuss her latest work, The God of the Woods, an instant New York Times bestseller and one of NPR’s 2024 “Books We Love” highlights.

Early morning, August 1975: a camp counselor discovers an empty bunk. Its occupant, Barbara Van Laar, has gone missing. Barbara isn’t just any thirteen-year-old: she’s the daughter of the family that owns the summer camp and employs most of the region’s residents. And this isn’t the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared. Barbara’s older brother similarly vanished fourteen years ago, never to be found.

As a panicked search begins, a thrilling drama unfolds. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the blue-collar community working in its shadow, Moore’s multi-threaded story invites readers into a rich and gripping dynasty of secrets and second chances. It is Liz Moore’s most ambitious and wide-reaching novel yet.

Join us in conversation with Liz as we embark on a tale of thrilling twists and disturbing disappearances. Register today to “enter the woods,” if you dare!
