A glossary of terms and discussion question-filled reading guide, created by the National Museum of the American Latino, encourages further research and exploration. Reception: Friday, October 3 | 5-7 PM

Gallery Hours: Tues - Fri, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM | Sat, 12:00 - 4:00 PM | additional hours by appointment

I find inspiration in nature as the source of life and beauty. When I paint, I look for this beauty in what surrounds me—the mountains, the birds and my love of wildflowers. I chose to work in black ink because it is a type of expressionistic painting that is done quickly that catches my inspiration from what is in my mind and what I see.

Black ink painting is an ancient way of painting using brush, paper and black ink. This type of painting combines both drawing and painting techniques using different tones of ink and different brush strokes that bring life to a painting. My paintings represent how I see the beauty of nature that surrounds us that captures the energy of expression.

The artworks in this exhibition pay homage to both the intricacies of nature as muse and the diverse range of artistic interpretations. Eleven artists chose artists whose work aligns with the incorporation of nature as a subject, and, frequently, as a medium.

The artists use words such as fluid, regenerative, porous, and fragile to describe works constructed with wool, wood, live succulents, and fungus.

OK Slip Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in New York along with Niagara. The trail can be muddy with recent showers but there are no rock scrambles.

New York State Museum

Join us for a special screening of Calico Rebellion: The Anti-Rent War and the Second American Revolution, an award-winning documentary that brings to life one of New York’s most dramatic but often overlooked chapters of history. In thefirst half of the 19th century, tenant farmers in New York State revolted against the patroon system—a system of land ownership implemented by the Dutch in New Netherland that prohibited farmers from owning their land outright—disguising themselves in calico gowns and leather masks to demand change. Their struggle, known as the Anti-Rent War, helped shape the future of American democracy and land ownership.

Following the film, the filmmaker and members of the production team will lead a moderated discussion with the audience, offering insight into the making of the film, the legacy of the Anti-Rent movement, and the descendants who continue to preserve this story today.

This program is presented as part of New York State History Month, a time to celebrate and reflect on the people, events, and movements that shaped our state and nation.

New York State Museum

Baseball and New York City (NYC) have shared a love affair like no other—full of big players, big deals, big heartbreaks, and big comebacks!

Throughout the evening, John Thorn, the official historian of Major League Baseball (MLB), will bring this epic romance to life. From the city's early courtship with the game to their dramatic breakups and joyful reunions, Thorn will reveal how NYC and MLB shaped each other's history—and captured the hearts of millions.

The night kicks off with a reception at 5 p.m. when attendees can explore baseball treasures from the New York State Library, New York State Museum, and New York State Archives.

State Librarian Lauren Moore will deliver opening remarks at 6 p.m., followed by Thorn’s talk covering the history of baseball in NYC from its earliest days to 1962, when, via the Mets, NYC again became a two-horse town. Afterward, New York State Museum historian Steve Loughman will take the mic to lead a lively conversation and audience Q&A with Thorn.

"Whether you're a lifelong baseball fan, a proud New Yorker, or love a great story, this program promises history, heart, and a whole lot of fun," says Moore.

About the Presenter

John Thorn is in his fifteenth year as the Official Historian of Major League Baseball. His many baseball books over the past five decades include Total Baseball, Treasures of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Baseball in the Garden of Eden, and Our Game, which also supplies the title for his blog.

Explore the park after dark!

Join us each month for an inclusive evening adventure on or near the full moon. As the sun sets and the moon rises, the park comes alive in subtle ways, and this program invites guests of all ages to discover the secret life of crepuscular animals- creatures most active during the twilight hours.

Take a guided walk through Hudson Crossing Park and search for signs of some of our quietest neighbors: deer, foxes, raccoons, bats, rabbits, and even fireflies. These elusive animals tend to avoid the hustle and bustle of the day, but under the glow of the full moon, they become more active — giving us a rare chance to spot them in their natural element.

Space is limited, and registration is required.

Jeffrey Miller—ASC&O Board Member, St. Lawrence University

Radio astronomers have long had to deal with human-created sources of interference when scanning the heavens: radio transmissions, microwave ovens, Wi-Fi routers, cell phones. As technology advances it creates more problems for astronomers trying to understand the nature of the Universe. Satellites in orbit around the Earth have frequently caused streaks on photographs taken through large visible-light telescopes, but with the increase of large “satellite constellations” we are now also seeing interference at radio wavelengths. St. Lawrence University astronomer Jeffrey Miller will talk about some of these sources of radio telescope interference, and the measures that astronomers are undertaking to protect the darkness of the night.

Saratoga National Historical Park

Have you ever wondered what plants and creatures you are seeing as you traverse the park or your own backyard? Join us for a nature walk where Park Rangers will discuss park species, identification, and natural resource management. Saratoga is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna. We would like to introduce you to some of the citizen science programs that can be used for collecting observations while in the park or in your backyard.

You can become a citizen scientist by participating in programs such as: iNaturalist, Seek, eBird, Nature's Notebook under the National Phenology Network, and Audubon's Christmas Bird Count. Having observations from data collected by volunteer citizen scientists, will help inform park resources staff about invasive species, population dynamics, time-sensitive interactions, range limits, species diversity, and the changing climate. Observations that are collected in the park will be compared to existing data. Data collected can also be used at the state and national level.

Park Rangers will demonstrate how to use these applications during the program. Meet at the Visitor Center to join the hike and be prepared to walk 2 miles on uneven terrain.

(USA, 2024, 90 mins, color, R)

Written and Directed by Jesse Eisenberg; starring Kieran Culkin (2025 OSCAR, GOLDEN GLOBE, SUNDANCE, BAFTA, and SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARD WINNER)

Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history.  - RottenTomates.com

“Eisenberg uses this cockeyed version of a road movie to tell a funny, moving, casually profound story about family, friendship, the weight of the Jewish past, the weight of everyone’s past and the different ways one deals with suffering.” John Powers, NPR, 10/30/24

Caldwell-Lake George Library

The Caldwell-Lake George Library Book Club will meet on Wednesday, October 15th at 6:30 pm to discuss The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman. It's rarely a quiet day for the Thursday Murder Club. Shocking news reaches them—an old friend has been killed, and a dangerous package he was protecting has gone missing. The gang's search leads them into the antiques business, where the tricks of the trade are as old as the objects themselves. As they encounter drug dealers, art forgers, and online fraudsters—as well as heartache close to home—Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim have no idea whom to trust. With the body count rising, the clock ticking down, and trouble firmly on their tail, has their luck finally run out? And who will be the last devil to die?

The group gathers at 6:30 pm and discussion begins at 7:00 pm. New members are always welcome.

This evening-length performance is a band-generated theatrical experience, featuring music from Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion’s Grammy-winning album Rectangles and Circumstance, as well as their first album Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part, with an interlude from Shaw’s pop duo Ringdown. Beginning with a lone spotlight on Shaw singing “I’ll Fly Away,” the performance builds as musicians gradually introduce lights and inventive instruments, culminating in an ecstatic full-ensemble experience featuring up-tempo songs like “Sing On” and “To the Sky”—a dazzling blend of DIY design and original music.

In celebration of the Tang Museum’s 25th anniversary, this presentation of Who Turns Out the Light continues a long-standing artistic partnership between Sō Percussion and the Tang. On the 8,800 foot peak of Cerro Pachón in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory has begun it’s ten-year mission to observe the southern sky.  The unique, specially designed 3,000 megapixel camera sensor array will conduct a wide-field survey of the universe that will be deeper and wider than all previous surveys combined.  Unlike other telescopes, Rubin’s telescope will not target specific objects, but will survey the sky in a predetermined cadence of observations at different sky positions in a varying pattern of order, duration, and filters.  In this way, it will obtain images applicable to different scientific questions from finding slow-moving asteroids near Earth to characterizing distant galaxies and quasars forming near the beginning of time.  The repetition of observations over ten years will allow astronomers to spot changes in appearance and behavior of objects too slow to be detected by traditional observatories.

In 2021, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence, the forced separation, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was brought to light, sparking a national outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities. Set amidst a groundbreaking investigation, Sugarcane illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere. - RottenTomatoes.com

Sugarcane is as harrowing as it is vital. It’s a remarkably explicit consideration of intergenerational trauma that manages to center specific suffering without forgoing any aspects of the conditions that birthed such violence.” Kyle Logan, Chicago Reader, 8/13/24

You are invited to join us online and be one of the first to hear from Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai about her astonishing memoir, Finding My Way. Malala reintroduces herself to the world, sharing how she navigated life as someone whose darkest moments threatened to define her narrative—while seeking the freedom to find out who she truly is.

Thrust onto the public stage at fifteen years old after the Taliban’s brutal attack on her life, Malala Yousafzai quickly became an international icon known for bravery and resilience. But away from the cameras and crowds, she spent years struggling to find her place in an unfamiliar world. Finding My Way is a story of friendship and first love, of anxiety and self-discovery, of trying to stay true to yourself when everyone wants to tell you who you are. In it, Malala traces her path from high school loner to reckless college student to a young woman at peace with her past. Through candid, often messy moments like nearly failing exams, getting ghosted, and meeting the love of her life, Malala reminds us that real role models aren’t perfect—they’re human.

Finding My Way is a vulnerable, surprising memoir that buzzes with authenticity, sharp humor, and tenderness. It is an intimate look at the life of a young woman taking charge of her destiny and is a deeply personal testament to the strength it takes to be unapologetically yourself. Register now for an online conversation you cannot miss!

Registration is required and a high speed internet connection is recommended. Register for this author talk and check out other online author talks here: https://libraryc.org/crandalllibrary Programs will be recorded and available to view at a later date.

Our next Project Local exhibition features the art of Ottavia Huang. Ms. Huang’s art was recently featured in Lake George Journey: An Alphabet Adventure, on sale now at the library and other local businesses. A reception honoring her will be held on Thursday, October 23rd at 6:00 pm.
The artist reflects. “My work captures urban and natural landscapes, emphasizing peace and tranquility. Using watercolor and pen, I create spontaneous, light-filled sketches that serve as documentations of my travels and explorations of New York as my newfound home. I aim to convey the beauty of nature through on-location sketches, portraying both the physicality and the emotions of every scene. Beyond landscapes, I explore connections and emotions in daily life, depicting bonds between friends, loved ones, and furry companions. Each sketch aims to evoke the serenity and emotional depth experienced in each moment, represented by light, transparent colors and simple lines.
Ms. Huang’s art will be on display until the end of November. Stay tuned for a watercolor and ink workshop, too! This exhibition is held in partnership with the Lake George Arts Project.

On October 7, 1777, the Second Battle of Saratoga began in field of ripening wheat at Stop 5 along today’s Battlefield Tour Road. By the end of the day, the United States had achieved a monumental victory which resulted in the surrender of General Burgoyne’s army 10 days later. However, questions have remained on how the battle unfolded. How exactly were the contending forces arrayed? How did the American Army achieve victory on that October day?

In the fall of 2021, a team of researchers, archaeologists, and military veterans assembled at Saratoga National Historic Park under the auspices of American Veterans Archaeological Recovery (AVAR) to look for answers to some of these questions. Ben Powers will share how the project played out and what was discovered during this three-week exploration.

Ben resides in Texas with his wife, K.C., and four children, Arthur, Michaela, Emma, and Jordan. He holds a master’s degree in strategic leadership from American Military University and served 24 years in the United States Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Ben is an author, YouTuber, and President of the Board of Directors of the American Veterans Archaeological Recovery Project (AVAR). He participated in fieldwork in Barber’s Wheatfield on the Saratoga Battlefield in the fall of 2021.

Support for the Fall Lecture Series is provided by Friends of Saratoga Battlefield. Reservations are required due to limited space. Email us (SARA_Reservations@nps.gov) to reserve your seat!

Coined as the “queen of British historical fiction,” Philippa Gregory returns to the infamous Tudor Court with a tale that is both timely and timeless. We invite you to sit down with us for an intriguing conversation with Gregory about her newest novel Boleyn Traitor (forthcoming October 14, 2025).

Jane Boleyn watches from the shadows of the Tudor Court, where secrets are currency, every choice is dangerous, and even the faintest whisper can seal the fate of queens.

For Jane, survival demands playing every role required of her: a loving wife who conceals her doubts, a devoted sister to Anne Boleyn at the height of her power, and an obedient spy who carefully wields her words. But in a court ruled by ambition and a tyrant’s sword, Jane must rely on her sharp wit and skillful maneuvering to outthink those around her, knowing that one wrong move could cost her everything.

With a rich tapestry of new historical insights and lyrical language honed over decades of writing, Gregory's return to the Tudors is a new definition of this most fascinating era. As the world becomes more extreme and unpredictable, Jane’s story of survival and ingenuity offers a compelling parallel, serving as both a powerful historical narrative and an echo of the challenges we face. This is a riveting tale of loyalty and betrayal, ambition and love—one that should not be missed by readers this fall.

Register today for this exciting glimpse into the perilous 16th century royal court!

Registration is required and a high speed internet connection is recommended. Register for this author talk and check out other online author talks here: https://libraryc.org/crandalllibrary Programs will be recorded and available to view at a later date.

How did Lewis, one of General Philip Schuyler's coachmen, earn a shoutout from Benjamin Franklin for his skilled maneuvering of rural roads? Join us as we dig deeper into the tools, knowledge, natural objects and skills that local enslaved people mastered while in bondage and piece together what 18th and early 19th century life might have been like for African Americans in Saratoga and Washington counties.
