Having started on violin at age four, by age nine she was already leading her own band and enjoying a rising regional reputation as a top-flight fiddler. “It was a very welcoming scene,” says Sara, who released a live cassette when she was 12. “If you could play, you were accepted. I learned a lot, playing standards like ‘Tennessee Waltz’ and ‘Faded Love’ at grange halls and dances. I loved how those songs could tell stories and make people dance.” At 16, Sara dropped out of school and joined legendary upstate Celtic bluegrass outfit the McKrells, recording two albums with the group and touring the U.S. and Ireland. “It was the best road education I could’ve asked for,” she recalls about her McKrells tenure. “They’re all world-class pickers, they have well-crafted songs, and they really know how to hold a room. They taught me a lot.” Between accompanying other mentors — including Seeger, on his Grammy-winning 2008 album At 89 — she made her solo debut with 2009’s Daisycutter, a disc whose moniker eventually became that of her band. After an eye-opening 2011 tour with the U.S. State Department-/Jazz at Lincoln Center-sponsored “Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad” revue that took her to Kosovo, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Turkey, she and Daisycutter recorded 2015’s Waiting for the Stars. The acclaimed disc earned her enthusiastic reviews and comparisons to paragons like Shawn Colvin and Sheryl Crow. – Our Summer Concert Series continues with Dan Duggan and Peggy Lynn, who are both steeped in Adirondack history and culture for decades. Individually and together, they share their knowledge and appreciation of the region through stories and tunes that engage every audience, especially families and children. Peggy Lynn, singer and songwriter, runs from folk to blues with a style and range that gives meaning and emotion to all her work. Her most powerful message is for the contributions and burdens of women. Peggy believes there needs to be a female role added to the record of Adirondack history. She co-authored Breaking Trail: Remarkable Women in the Adirondacks. Bringing these stories to the public stage in her own program, “Mountain Women Can Be Heroes,” Peggy celebrates, through song and story, the comical, amazing and poignant experiences of Adirondack women as the unsung heroes. Dan Duggan, nationally touring performer, is rapidly being acknowledged as one of the finest dulcimer players and composers in the country. As recipient of the prestigious National Hammered Dulcimer Championship, Dan's accomplishment, is even more considerable as he is the first winner to have performed all original compositions. Dan's renditions of traditional Irish and American tunes reflect his study and understanding of their original context. Whether re-creating 18th century harp pieces or vibrant 19th century dance tunes, Dan has engaged audiences nationwide in a variety of musical styles and moods. The Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance is Honoring the 250th Anniversary of the Fort George Smallpox Hospital by bringing history and medical expertise together. The Continental Army’s effort to stem the outbreak of smallpox, which devastated its soldier population during the 1775-76 invasion of Quebec, is the focus of 3 presentations and a panel discussion with audience participation at 6:30 PM on Thursday, July 9 in the Fort William Henry Conference Center. The speaker/panelist lineup includes:
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION With the establishment of the Fort George general hospital in July 1776, Lake George became the focal point of the army’s engagement in combating the deadly effects of smallpox on its troops. More than 3,000 soldiers were hospitalized at Lake George during the summer and early fall of that year, with estimates of fatalities running from 1/4 to 1/3 of the total treated. The footprint of the hospital likely spread from today’s Lake George Battlefield Park well to the west, so it is not surprising that the 44 remains recently reinterred in the park were discovered nearly a mile away. Given the high fatality rate of smallpox patients and the practice at the time of quickly burying the victims to lessen the number of additional infections, it’s very likely that there are hundreds of additional remains dispersed throughout the community of Lake George. And so the connection between the Continental Army’s general hospital at Fort George in 1776 and the new Repose of the Fallen burial grounds in Lake George Battlefield Park is direct and historic. The Alliance is proud of the public’s extraordinary response to this new memorial and pleased to furnish additional education on what led to this key moment in American Revolution history. Michael Gabriel’s book on General Montgomery will be available for purchase and author signature at the July 9 presentation. – Hillview Free Library (Diamond Point) Delivering an energetic mix of bluegrass and mountain music the High Peaks Bluegrass Band is a four piece bluegrass ensemble performing all across the North Country and Capital District of New York! This program is part of the Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program for children, teens, and adults. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States, join museum educator Tyler Warman for an immersive exploration of the Port of New York and its pivotal role in the American Revolution. From the arrival of the massive British armada in 1776 to the final departure of the Redcoats on Evacuation Day in 1783, New York’s waters served as one of the war’s most contested and strategically important theaters, shaping the course of the conflict and the nation’s future. Adirondack Interpretive Center Join us for a guided walk along our beautiful Rich Lake Trail every Wednesday and Saturday at 1pm from June 27th through August 29th. The Rich Lake trail is a flat 1 mile loop that winds through various habitats, including a raised boardwalk through a cedar swamp, and offers views of the Goodnow Fire Tower. – Remnant / RevelationIn this solo exhibition, assemblage sculptor Mary Pat Wager presents a body of steel sculptures and wall pieces constructed from industrial, agrarian, and vintage materials — objects sourced from junkyards, estates, and the quiet edges of a century that built everything…and preserved almost nothing. Through welding, deconstruction, and reconstruction, Wager forces these remnants into new configurations, new conversations, and new meaning. The work does not mourn what was discarded. It interrogates it. Each piece asks what we chose to throw away — and what that choice reveals about us. In Wager’s hands, a remnant is never only what it was. It becomes a record. A relic. A mirror held up to a culture in the act of forgetting itself. The revelation is not in the transformation of the material — it is in what the material was already trying to say. Remnant / Revelation invites the viewer to reconsider the boundary between waste and witness, between the end of one story and the beginning of another. Bio

For kids in Prek-K – Registration required: Crandall Public Library In her ambitious new memoir, Migrant Heart: Essays About Things I Can’t Forget, beloved bestselling author Reyna Grande illuminates the hidden cost of the American Dream and the complex journey of healing that follows survival. What is the true power of stories? Can they heal the jagged edges of a traumatic childhood? Is the cost of telling the story worth the price of the cure? With her signature blend of sophistication and raw honesty, Grande interrogates how living between two nations, two languages, and two identities has shaped the woman, mother, and writer she has become. Moving from the legacy of violence in her hometown of Iguala, Mexico, to a bittersweet family vacation in Europe spent reconciling her own impoverished past with her children’s world of abundance, she uncovers startling truths about the nature of survival. Whether being racially profiled in the Arizona borderlands or finding unexpected wisdom from the slugs in her garden, Grande unflinchingly asks: How do we bridge the gap between who we were and who we have become? How do we turn pain into power? When memory threatens to define us, how can we use story to heal while still honoring our boundaries? Register today for this virtual talk if you identify as a seeker, a dreamer, or “anyone who believes in the enduring, transformative power of finding one’s voice.” – Registration required: The Hyde Collection Join us in the Courtyard of Hyde House for a 45-minute guided yoga practice designed specifically for the museum setting. The result is a calm, accessible practice that helps lower stress, open physical and mental space, and leave participants feeling more grounded and at ease. They play grungy original horn funk inspired by the after-dark variety of New Orleans street music. It’s a melee of horns, super heavy drums and bass, and your favorite type of chunky guitar riffing that leaves your bum shaking and your face grinning.
Highly improvised, kinetic, effect-soaked horns create textural soundscapes with razor sharp horn lines. The vibe is high-energy and dance-focused – the rhythm section interlocked and syncopated, keeping us in the pocket and the dancers moving.
Invoking the spirit of ’70’s electric experimental jazz pioneers like Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderly, Donald Byrd, and Herbie Hancock and bringing in harder-modern avant-funk influences like Galactic, Budos Band, and sax virtuoso Skerik, Oobleck delivers a one of a kind sound and energy not matched by many in the local scene.
– – Fiddle tunes, folksongs and fancy footwork will be featured from this acoustic duet called Quickstep. John Kirk is the primary vocalist and instrumental wizard on fiddle mandolin & more. Trish Miller plays banjo, guitar and provides percussive dance steps. Together, this married couple has been working and teaching in upstate New York for over three decades. They present traditional tunes and witty songs with unique arrangements and warm clear vocals. Old time music is the basis for their repertoire, but they also like to mix in some originals, Celtic, early country songs, humorous selections, and Appalachian clog dancing. Many songs and tunes are rooted in the local lore of the northeast woodlands. Their story-telling songs and poetic pieces make their shows fine entertainment for all ages. In 2022, John was inducted into the North American (& NY) Fiddler’s Hall of Fame. The duet has twice been nominated for Eddie Awards in New York’s Capitol district. Both of them are music instructors at Skidmore College, and John is part of the music faculty at Bennington College as well. They have been given numerous grants for concerts and teaching including their selection by the US State Department to various cities in Eastern Europe. As teaching artists, John & Trish have conducted school programs and residencies in music & dance heritage since the 1990’s. For many years, they have taught at summer music camps, museums, libraries, coffeehouses and more. Her book, Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make–And Keep–Friends, explores the science of different attachment styles and how they impact our relationships–often in ways we don’t realize! How do we make and keep friends in an era of distraction, burnout, and chaos, especially in a society that often prizes romantic love at the expense of other relationships? In Platonic, Dr. Marisa G. Franco unpacks the latest, often counterintuitive findings about the bonds between us—for example, why your friends aren’t texting you back (it’s not because they hate you!), and the myth of “friendships happening organically” (making friends, like cultivating any relationship, requires effort!). As Dr. Franco explains, to make and keep friends you must understand your attachment style—secure, anxious, or avoidant: it is the key to unlocking what’s working (and what’s failing) in your friendships. Making new friends, and deepening longstanding relationships, is possible at any age—in fact, it’s essential. The good news: there are specific, research-based ways to improve the number and quality of your connections using the insights of attachment theory and the latest scientific research on friendship. Platonic provides a clear and actionable blueprint for forging strong, lasting connections with others—and for becoming our happiest, most fulfilled selves in the process. Register today to learn more about how to harness the science of human connection to create cultures of belonging. – Registration required: Crandall Public Library Children and their caregivers are invited to join Barbara Lukas from WMHT to enjoy the story “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” by Ryan T. Collins is a New York State licensed bird guide as well as a writer and speaker on ornithology topics. She has led walks and made presentations for many organizations, including Audubon, the Adirondack Mountain Club, and the New York State Ornithological Association. See wild birds up close and personal with NYS Museum Ornithologist and Curator of Birds and Mammals, Dr. Jeremy Kirchman and Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission Conservation Director, Neil Gifford, as they capture and fit them with uniquely coded leg-bands. Bird bands are provided by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL) and banding is conducted under state and federal permits. These bands allow scientists to identify individuals; which helps us to study how long birds live, where they breed, and when and where they migrate. While in-hand, the banders carefully take measurements that can indicate a bird’s health, age, and breeding condition. Tracking the distribution and abundance of species that specialize on our fire-dependent inland pitch pine-scrub oak barrens during the breeding season can also help guide the management and restoration of this globally rare habitat.
