Jim Webster — Amateur astronomer and Astro-photographer from New Jersey, and has been a member of the Astronomical Society of the Toms River Area since 2017. His concerns about the impact of light pollution on astronomy and, more importantly, on nature led him to join the International Dark-Sky Association, becoming an advocate for them in 2021. One of the tools utilized to study light pollution was the citizen science project "Globe at Night" found on SciStarter. Jim’s interest in SciStarter and citizen science projects has expanded over time, becoming a SciStarter Ambassador in 2023.

SciStarter and citizen science are now part of the growing number of available presentations he has on astronomy, photography, light pollution, and citizen science of both Earth and Space sciences.

“I have been doing this for a few years and still consider myself a beginner and always will; there is always something new to learn.”

This all fits into his interest in protecting the night sky, and as of 2026, we have established DarkSky New Jersey as a 501c-3, Protecting Our Night Skies, for People, Wildlife, and Nature.

What if a single morning could help transform an entire landscape?

On June 20, you are invited to be part of something BIG. Join us for a community-powered effort to plant 5,500 native plants at the Indian Lake capped landfill site. Together, up to 150 volunteers will turn this underutilized space into a thriving habitat for bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.

This is more than a planting day. It is the start of a long-term restoration effort that will benefit the Adirondacks for years to come. Every plant you put in the ground contributes to healthier ecosystems, stronger biodiversity, and a more resilient future.

It is also a chance to enjoy the simple, satisfying fun of working side by side with others who care about this place. Expect a lively, collaborative atmosphere as volunteers from across the region come together, get their hands in the soil, and see the progress unfold in real time. There is something special about looking across a field and knowing you helped create it, together.

Garden clubs, community groups, and organizations are encouraged to join as teams. Bringing a group is a great way to share the experience and make an even bigger impact. If you would like to register as a group, please reach out to info@adkaction.org.

No experience is needed. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or trying this for the first time, you will be part of a welcoming, hands-on effort where everyone plays a role.

Artist In The Wilderness Artist Statement by Robert Stump The wilderness calls to me and I follow it. I pursue it and stalk it like a hunter. I try to capture it but rarely succeed. I want to hold it in my heart so much it hurts. Sometimes after completing a painting I walk out of the woods and feel like a thief, like I have stolen a moment in time. I take my trophy home to hang on my wall to remind me of the brief connection that the wilderness has allowed me. I realize then that I have been given a gift from nature.

Presentation by Joseph W. Zarzynski, RPA, at the Fort William Henry Conference Center

Last year marked the beginning of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution (1775–1783).  However, the French & Indian War (aka-Seven Years’ War) witnessed significant events in North America and the high seas that influenced how warfare was contested in the Revolutionary War.  Mr. Zarzynski, a retired maritime archaeologist, will examine British and French warships during the French & Indian War (1755–1763), with an emphasis on Lake George.  The talk will review how French & Indian War battle crafts were precursors to some waterborne activities during the War of Independence.  Moreover, he will show and talk about several hull-structure artifacts from the collection of Fort William Henry Museum and the significance of that material culture.

Mr. Zarzynski participated in many underwater archaeology projects in Lake George, as well as at Narragansett Bay, Massachusetts, Florida, Lake Champlain, and Otsego Lake.  He is the author of eight books including Ghost Fleet Awakened–Lake George’s Sunken Bateaux of 1758 and Fort William Henry’s Moments in Time.  The presenter is a board member of the French & Indian War Society at Lake George, an advisor to the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project, and member of the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance.

Mr. Zarzynski’s books will be available for purchase and author signature at the presentation.

Great Camp Sagamore

In 2026, our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence — a moment that changed the course of history. While the American Revolution is often remembered for its battles, bold leaders, and pivotal debates, it was also a time of deep patriotism, courage, and music.

Join us for a lively and engaging program that brings the spirit of the Revolution to life through song. Featuring eight historic pieces from the era, this performance weaves music together with storytelling, offering brief historical context that highlights the people, passions, and principles that shaped a nation.

More than a history lesson, this is an invitation to experience the Revolution as it was felt — in taverns, in camps, and in the hearts of those who longed for liberty.
