Hear the high-stakes stories of military supply, regional rivalries, and the tensions that nearly changed the course of the Battle of Saratoga. Join Lower Adirondack Pride in collaboration with Kitch a Vibe and Black Walnut Books for our quarterly Pride Book Club — this quarter we’ll be reading The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan.

About the Book: Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

As a young adult, she and her best friend Amanda fantasized escaping their difficult homes and moving to California to become movie stars. But the day before their grand adventure, a tragedy shattered their dreams and Cate has been on the run ever since, taking on different names and charting a new future. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.

The First Adirondackers reaches far beyond the familiar timelines of settlement to tell a deeper story of the Adirondacks – one that has been shaped by an Indigenous presence for more than 12,000 years. Blending scientific insight with Indigenous knowledge and storytelling, the book reveals how Native peoples lived with, learned from, and stewarded this landscape across countless generations. Through changing climates, waterways, and lifeways, authors Curt Stager and David Kanietakeron Fadden illuminate a history that has too often been overlooked or simplified. The Adirondacks emerge not as an untouched wilderness, but as a homeland rich with memory, meaning, and continuity. The First Adriondackers invites readers to reconsider what they think they know about the region and the enduring relationship between people and place.

About The Speaker:

Curt Stager is a scientist, educator, and author whose work brings the deep history of climate, water, and landscape vividly to life. A professor at Paul Smith’s College, his writing and teaching has earned recognition statewide. He has spent decades translating complex environmental research into clear, compelling stories for public audiences.

David Kanietakeron Fadden is an Akwesasne Mohawk artist, writer, and cultural historian whose paintings, illustrations, and stories are rooted in Haudenosaunee knowledge and lived experience in the Adirondacks. Raised in a family of artists and storytellers, his work serves as both creative expression and cultural preservation. Together, they are the authors of The First Adirondackers, a sweeping account of 12,000 years of Indigenous presence that reshapes how we understand the region’s past.

Speaker: Maury Thompson, author, freelance writer, and former reporter for The Post-Star.

The morning after the 1916 presidential election, myriad newspapers across the nation, including The New York Times, erroneously reported that Republican Charles Evans Hughes had won the election. When the final California returns came in, it showed that not Hughes, but incumbent Democrat Woodrow Wilson, had won.

Key issues in one of the closest presidential races sound quite contemporary:  international security, as the United State debated whether to enter World War I, global trade and tariffs, and the southern border with Mexico.

Maury Thompson will speak about the 1916 campaign and the candidates, with an emphasis on his recent research about the California vote, which determined the outcome. Thompson also will speak about Hughes and Wilson as role models of political civility.

This is a virtual program.

Teddy Roosevelt biographer Paul Grondahl will discuss the dramatic hours when Roosevelt climbed Mount Marcy, learned that President William McKinley had died of an assassin’s wounds, a daring midnight wagon ride to the North Creek train station, and his swearing-in as the 26th President of the United States in Buffalo on September 14, 1901. Grondahl’s talk will clarify one lingering mystery about Roosevelt’s long delay at the Tahawus Club before he set out for North Creek.

Paul Grondahl is the Opalka Endowed Director of the New York State Writers Institute at the University at Albany, one of the nation’s pre-eminent literary presenting organizations. He is an award-winning journalist who worked as a reporter for 33 years at the Albany Times Union, where he still contributes a weekly column. He was named director of the Writers Institute in 2017 and is also a distinguished alumnus in arts and letters at UAlbany, where he earned a master’s degree in English. He is the author of several books, including political biographies of Albany Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd and Theodore Roosevelt, titled I Rose Like a Rocket: The Political Education of Theodore Roosevelt. His forthcoming biography, Andy Rooney: A Lucky Life, will be published by SUNY Press in the fall of 2026.

Treat yourself to a fun and relaxing painting experience with the vibrant, expressive medium of acrylics! Whether you've never picked up a brush or you paint regularly, Patrice welcomes all skill levels in a supportive, creative atmosphere. She'll guide you through color mixing and layering techniques every step of the way. All supplies are provided, and everyone leaves with a finished piece to take home.

This month, we are inspired by Vincent van Gogh's Wheatfields Under Cloud Filled Sky. Van Gogh painted his landscapes with bold, swirling brushstrokes and intense, emotional color, transforming an ordinary field beneath a dramatic sky into something alive with energy and feeling. His work invites us to see the natural world not just as it is, but as it moves us.

This class is the second in our series, Inspired by the Masters. In each class, you'll learn what the Master artist was trying to convey and the methods to help achieve it, practicing techniques that are valuable in acrylic painting. Each session also includes the history behind the featured Master artist and the important role they played in the world of art.

Award-winning and bestselling author Miranda Cowley Heller takes us on an intimate journey through the life stages of a woman in her new poetry collection, What the Deep Water Knows. Delicate, yet exceedingly raw, these poems will transport you as vividly as any work of fiction.

If I could fly backward, I would.

To the safety of branches, to the time

when my heart still raced for you,

twelve hundred beats a minute.

In poetry that is at once bold and lyrical, affecting and devastatingly frank, Miranda Cowley Heller takes us through childhood, marriage, motherhood, and beyond. Suffused with the natural world and the landscape of Cape Cod, where many of the poems are set, What the Deep Water Knows contemplates love in all the seasons.

Register now to celebrate National Poetry Month with this graceful new poetry collection.

About the Author:

Miranda Cowley Heller was raised in New York City and Cape Cod. Her debut novel The Paper Palace was a number one New York Times bestseller in the US, a Sunday Times bestseller in the UK, and was longlisted for the Women’s Prize. She has worked as a senior vice president and head of drama series at HBO, developing and overseeing such shows as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Deadwood, and Big Love, among others. This is her first poetry collection.

From Oscar-nominated Director and Producer Kim A. Snyder ("Death By Numbers," “Newtown,” “Us Kids”) and Executive Producer Sarah Jessica Parker, “The Librarians” takes viewers from Texas to Florida and beyond, where local libraries have become unexpected battlegrounds in a national struggle over parental control, intellectual freedom, and democracy itself. Sparked by the controversial “Krause List” in Texas, which targets 850 books centered on race and LGBTQIA+ stories, the film takes a deep investigative dive into the escalating movement against book banning. The film captures the courage and resilience of the everyday heroes, librarians, as well as concerned parents and students flanking them, who have become first responders in the fight for the freedom to read, standing defiantly against censorship at all costs.

This event will begin with a screening of the film in the Huxley Theater, followed by a panel discussion with State Librarian Lauren Moore, New York Public Library Senior Director of Reading and Engagement and author Brian Jones, Past-President of the American Library Association Emily Drabinski, American Libraries columnist and Library Freedom Project member Reanna Esmail, and Amanda Hoffman, a former library assistant who fought for their community through the turmoil surrounding a Drag Queen Story Hour. They will discuss the challenges libraries face today, their personal experiences in the battle against censorship, and their suggestions for what libraries and their supporters can do in the continuing struggle for intellectual freedom.

The discussion will be moderated by James Paleologopoulos, Producer for WAMC/Northeast Public Radio’s On the Road, and will be recorded for later broadcast.

Saratoga National Historical Park unveils a new exhibit for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and, next year, the Battles of Saratoga. In April 1777, two French ships laden with military supplies, including more than 100 cannons, arrived in Portsmouth, NH. These weapons proved critical in enabling the forces of the United States to fight two campaigns that summer. In conjunction with Colonial National Historical Park, Saratoga staff were able to secure this French 4-pound cannon a la suidoise named La Poesie to be displayed during these important commemorations. We will open the new exhibit with three speakers unveiling the history of these cannons in addition to La Poesie herself:

Robert A. Selig is a historical consultant who received his Ph.D. in history from the Universität Würzburg in Germany in 1988. He is a specialist on the role of French forces under the comte de Rochambeau during the American War of Independence and serves as project historian for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail Project. Dr. Selig will discuss the political environment in France which led to the convenient availability of hundreds of cannons just when the Americans needed them the most.

Park Ranger Eric Schnitzer will share how ten of the recently arrived French cannons came to the American Northern Army and their impact on the Battles of Saratoga.

Curator Christine Valosin will describe the process which brought La Poesie to Saratoga and announce another important project the park is undertaking in partnership with the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield to ensure the French cannons will have a presence on the battlefield itself in the near future.

Room for the lecture portion of the event is strictly limited. Reservations must be made by emailing us at e-mail us. No reservation is required to simply view the cannon in the Visitor Center.

Be part of the conversation as we explore how the fight for freedom and equality didn’t end with the American Revolution—it evolved. As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, this engaging panel invites you to discover how generations of New Yorkers continued to challenge injustice and expand the meaning of liberty.

In New York, independence was just the starting point. From uprisings over land and rent in the 1840s to labor activism in 20th-century classrooms and the movement for LGBTQ+ rights ignited by the Stonewall Uprising, the state has consistently been at the forefront of transformative change.

Featuring historians and authors Bruce W. Dearstyne, Nancy Newman, Dennis Gaffney, and Ashley Hopkins-Benton, the panel draws on insights from Revolutionary New York: 250 Years of Social Change to highlight powerful stories of activism, resistance, and reform.

Bring your questions and join the discussion as we reflect on New York’s ongoing legacy of revolution—and what it means for the future.

On Tuesday, April 28 at 11:00 AM, we’ll be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony for our new accessible kayak launch at Lock C5 Island, followed by a short reception. The public is warmly invited to attend.

This new launch is designed to make getting out on the water safer and more accessible for individuals of all abilities. With supportive features that allow for easier entry and exit, it opens the door for more people to experience the beauty of the Champlain Canal.

“This project is about making sure everyone has the opportunity to experience the canal,” said Kate Morse. “We’ve always believed that the outdoors should be accessible to all, and this launch helps turn that belief into something tangible for our community.”

Installed by BoardSafe, this launch represents an important step forward in Hudson Crossing Park’s ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

This project was made possible through generous grant support, including a $7,500 Trail Grant from Saratoga County, a $24,999 Quality of Life Grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, and $15,000 from AARP.

The library is hosting a Poetry Month reading and you are invited!  Join us in the Community Room on April 30 at 7:00pm and share your favorite poem.  By a favorite poem we mean a poem you love, maybe a poem you’ve read numerous times, a poem that means a lot to you. We are following the guidelines established by Robert Pinsky’s Favorite Poem Project, so we ask that you don’t read an original poem, or a poem by a family member. Rather, choose a poem from the great tradition of world poetry, a poem published in an anthology or published by an established publisher.

Critically acclaimed poet, David Graham, will be Master of Ceremonies.

Each reader will have about 5 minutes to introduce the poem, let us know why this poem is important to you, and to read the poem.

People wishing to read should email Dan Hubbs at: dhubbs1@sals.edu.The first fifteen responders will be guaranteed a five minute slot to read and to share why they chose the poem. Time permitting, additional people will have a chance to read.

All are welcome to attend and listen!

Join us in conversation with bestselling author Jason Reynolds as we discuss his latest work, Coach, the fifth–and last–entry in the highly popular Track series. Following the immersive stories of Ghost, Lu, Patina, and Sunny, it’s finally time for Coach to shine in his own book as we discover: Who was Coach before he became an inspiring leader?

Before Coach was the man who gave caring yet firm-handed guidance to Ghost, Lu, Patina, and Sunny on the Defenders track team, he was little Otie Brody, who was obsessed with Mr. 9.99 (a.k.a. Carl Lewis) and Marty McFly from Back to the Future. Like Mr. 9.99—and his own dad—Otie is a sprinter. Sprint free or die is practically his motto.

Then his dad, who is always away on business trips, comes home with a pair of Jordans. JORDANS. Fine as fine can be. Otie puts them on and feels like he can leap to the moon…maybe even leap like Mr. 9.99 when he won the Olympic gold medal in the long jump. But one morning he wakes up to find his brand-new secret weapon kicks are missing—right off his feet! And Otie just might have a fuzzy memory of his dad easing them off as Otie was sleeping, but that can’t be right, can it?

Unless all the reasons for his dad’s “gone’s” are very different from what he’s been told… Because now, not only are the Jordans missing, but so is his father.

Experience Hudson Crossing Park in a whole new light—moonlight! This inclusive, family-friendly program takes place on or near the full moon each month, giving participants the rare chance to explore the park after dark and discover some of its quieter, more elusive residents: crepuscular animals.

Crepuscular creatures—like deer, foxes, raccoons, rabbits, bats, and even fireflies—are most active at dawn and dusk, when the world is a little quieter. Under the glow of the full moon, they’re even more likely to be out and about, using the extra light to hunt, hide, and explore.

Participants will use all their senses to search for signs of wildlife—looking for movement, listening for calls, and learning how these animals thrive in the twilight hours.
